In this spin-off series, Hara has an encounter with Aoto "Sora" Sorano at a bar in Ni-chōme, but rebuffs him upon discovering he is a student at Touichikou. Sora sets up a date between Hara and Sajō after learning about their history, and Hara achieves a sense of closure on his pursuit of Sajō. Satoshi Arisaka, a teacher Hara once kissed as a student, is hired as a substitute teacher at Touichikou. Satoshi is dating Hibiki Sano, a student, and Hara intervenes to reconcile their relationship. Sorano angrily tells Hara that he needs to care more about his own happiness; they kiss, but mutually decide not to pursue a relationship for the time being.

I only wrote this review just in case because I wouldn't like to see the name of this title get a bad reputation. If you're just watching this randomly and know nothing about the VN or 90s version then it won't matter or if you're just watching it for other reasons... Story (8/10): Even tho this movie is good, the story isn't very deep or emotional. In real life first loves can be a very complicated thing, but not for these characters. The story flows as it should be, there's isn't a "dramatic twist" or a "love rival" or a "love triangle", this movie didn't need that

Overall: If you're looking for a hardcore yaoi movie then you'll be disappointed because this movie is very romantic and REAL. You can easily feel the characters and understand their actions because they're very relatable.

Hara is by far the worst part of this story, but he is most easy to ignore in this first volume. I would have enjoyed the story more if these high school kids didn't have to deal with a child predator butting into their relationship. Being a teenager is already rough enough without being taken advantage of by an authority figure you are forced to spend time with every day, especially when that behavior is excused by practically everyone around you. Both depict male/male relationships with a focusing On the development of the romance in a school setting. Both feature characters with genuine admiration for one another learning to navigate the obstacles of dating with a light hearted, slice of life-esque tone. Doukyusei: Classmates was positively received by critics, many of whom offered extensive praise for the film's production and animation. Jacob Chapman of Anime News Network called the film "meticulous, careful, and almost painfully sensitive in its matchless character animation", and described the story "heartwarming and fulfilling, even if its substance isn't one drop as unique as the movie's style." [60] In his review for the Los Angeles Times, Charles Solomon called the plot "rather standard", but offered praise for film's watercolor-style animation. [61] Cody Perez of Fandom Post called the film a "bold attempt to bring over a rather niche anime genre to theaters across the US", noting that the "beautiful animation and believable romance help to overlook the very fast pacing and inconsistent tone." [62]However, even though I liked the way it was put together there is no helping that the progression of the relationship between the two felt a bit rushed. We see all the times they had issues together, and how they were solved, but are left only to imagine what their relationship is during its successful times, aka all the time that was skipped between acts. Considering the time there was no helping it, but I still wanted to see them do a few really cute couple like things. Or at least a few more than what we've seen, like them going out on a date or just talking about something in a 'funtional conversation' scene, as there was a lot of awkward silence from the shy Sajou. As for the plot, I found it to be a bit cliche at times but I enjoy the slowness of it all. Of course, it could have been slower. The main characters fall "in love" very easily however I think many teens do that as well. There were some events that could have been easily taken out, such as certain scenes featuring a certain gay teacher (now where have I not seen that before?). There were a lot of issues left untouched by the mangaka which I wish she could have resolved. The ending was very open ended and didn't exactly tie everything together. It was too abrupt for my taste. Perez, Cody (May 7, 2016). "Doukyusei Anime Movie Review". Fandom Post . Retrieved February 19, 2020. In their final year of high school, Sajō is accepted to study pharmacology at Kyoto University; when his mother is diagnosed with cancer, he introduces Kusakabe to her as his boyfriend. Kusakabe intends to stay in Tokyo to pursue a career in music, and performs at a music festival in Nîmes that forces him to leave Japan until immediately before graduation. At graduation, Sajō and Kusakabe visit the classroom where they met, where they confront their divergent plans for their respective futures. Sajō confesses his love for Kusakabe, and they have sex; Kusakabe proposes they marry when they turn twenty, which Sajō accepts.

I was not disappointed. The story is simple, of two high school boys and their blooming love. Or as the manga itself says: I actually liked the way the story was seperated out. It was cut into seasons (spring, summer vaction etc.), where each chunk had its own issue for the couple, a climax in tension, as well as a resolution. It starts out strong with the two getting to know eachother and then realizing they're in love (rather than the love at first sight plot device). By the end they've been going out around a year, and it involves the passing of time and their futures, making it seem like a more successful realtionship despite the short amount of time the movie had. The style of storytelling was also wonderful, as the watcher is able to see and understand the point of view of both MCs,Kusakabe Hikaru and Rihito Sajou. Hodgkins, Crystalyn (July 8, 2018). "Seven Seas Adds Railgun, Kobayashi's Dragon Maid, Orphen Spinoff Manga; 3 Light Novel Series". Anime News Network . Retrieved February 19, 2020. This was mostly because neither character really bothers to work for their relationship. They both enter it thinking the hard part's over, and freeze at the hint of any kind of challenge. Any time they're in conflict, they let it fester until they can have a big, dramatic moment which loses the heartwarming factor in favour of a frustration because they could have just talked to eachother, damn it.

Great Books You Must Read

I quite liked some works by Nakamura Asumiko. This isn’t one of them. It’s just another of many examples of BL genre setting the expectations so low, any not completely awful story seems like a masterpiece in comparison. The amount of cuteness coming from both of them is heartwarming, and there is only hints to the oh-so-tiring seme and uke roles. Loo, Egan (April 5, 2016).
